Into the hedges!

Cutting the hedges may become the first garden assignment of the new season. There is however a difference between renewal pruning and topiary pruning. It should be noted that heavier renewal pruning should take place before March. It’s prohibited in Germany between 1st March and 30th September, to avoid jeopardizing potential nesting sites for birds and other animals. A purely topiary cut, that is to say the cosmetic trimming of the hedge, by contrast, can be done throughout the year.

Renewal pruning can be done without concern once temperatures climb past the mark of minus five degrees. Feel free to do a thorough job of it, as that will make the hedge thicker and grow very evenly as a result. Pruning is especially fun with powerful, battery-operated hedge shears. Gardena’s product range includes two powerful, battery-driven devices with the ComfortCut Li-18/50 and PowerCut Li-40/60 models.

Step by step

Once temperatures no longer drop below five degrees, even at night, it’s the perfect time for your first grass cutting. It is important that the lawn is dry when mowing for the first time. After a long winter break, the first step is to clear your lawn of leaves, branches and moss, so that it can “breathe”. The first cut shouldn’t be too short, as the grass needs to get used to the original cutting height. It’s therefore best to adjust your lawnmower to the desired result step by step. A height of about four centimetres is considered the ideal length for grass.

Particularly sunny patches of your lawn should remain a bit longer, as otherwise they will dry out more quickly. The more regularly it’s mowed afterwards, the better the blades of grass will get used to the desired cut height. With recurring mows, the grass will branch out at the base and the lawn surface will remain beautifully dense. With the battery-powered PowerMax lawnmowers, Gardena offers the perfect partners for the entire season.

Trimmers are well suited for fine tuning at the edges of your lawn, and everywhere the mower can’t reach. Here too, Gardena provides the right helpers for every area. The PowerCut Li-40/30, with its 40 V* battery, is especially suited for larger gardens, for example. When places to be trimmed are shortened before the actual mowing, it saves the gardener from having to gather up the trimmings later. These can simply be gathered up, along with leaves and thin branches from hedge pruning, with the lawnmower.

*The maximum output voltage without load is 40 V, the nominal voltage 36 V
