It is no secret that supermarket prices have been rising for some time now. And it is not just the cost of vegetable oil that is cause for concern. Fruit and vegetable prices have been steadily rising since 2015, with fruit becoming 19 percent more expensive over the past seven years and vegetable prices going up by 33 percent in the same time frame.1 The past few months have seen prices jump up at an alarming rate, with rising energy prices and higher costs for wages and fertilisers mainly to blame. But it is possible to become less dependent on the supermarkets.

With a few tools like a rake and a shovel, fresh fruit and vegetables can be grown at home. According to the Rabobank Food Navigator 20212, on average almost half (47.1 percent) of the respondents already grow fruit or vegetables in their garden or on their balcony, with a further 10.5 percent seriously planning to start. This is a great way to save money and have fun in the process. Tending to precious plants and watching them grow is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Fresh cherry tomatoes, sweet, juicy raspberries and crunchy cucumbers picked at home taste so much better than produce that has a long journey to the supermarket shelf behind it.

The joy of growing fruit and veggies at home

Small kitchen garden, garden balcony or elaborate raised beds? There are several ways of growing fruit and vegetables at home – no matter what the budget and space restrictions are. Keen gardeners with little space to play with can always opt for low-maintenance potted plants to grow lettuce or radishes. City gardeners with a balcony have the handy option of vertical planting systems like NatureUp!, which is ideal for the likes of cherry tomatoes and peas. Raised beds are a good choice for gardeners who have more space and want to take their pick from virtually all of the available fruit and veg options. There are several smart watering solutions too, including AquaBloom, the automatic irrigation solution without a tap or electrical connection, and other drip irrigation systems.
