Once the temperatures start to drop, it’s time for your tools to get the attention they deserve in the form of cleaning, maintenance and even repairs where necessary. GARDENA has some tips to share for winter tool care.
1. Give the tools a bathy-tubby scrub
Gardeners should set aside some time to give their pruners, shovels, rakes and other hand-held tools a proper once-over before they put them away for the winter. Spades may still be covered in soil from summer gardening, and there may still be sap on your pruner blades. The first step is to wash them with warm water and a brush.
Once hobby gardeners have cleaned their tools with water, it is essential that they rub them dry. Metal parts should be sprayed with special spray to prevent rust, and blades should be checkedto see if they need sharpening. Once they are clean, dry and sharpened, your tools can be packed away for their well-earned rest.
2. Irrigation systems in hibernation
Rain water tanks and watering cans should be completely emptied prior to the first frost. Otherwise, they may burst. Hobby gardeners should also run pumps, hoses, sprayers and sprinklers completely empty, and then store them in a dry place protected against frost.
Outside taps and water pipes exposed to cold night-time temperatures should be shut off over the main tap and bled off. In this way, frozen water cannot damage or destroy them.
