As part of the Husqvarna Group, Gardena is participating in the Group-wide sustainability programme “Sustainovate”. It has enjoyed great success, as shown by the interim assessment five years after the programme was first launched in 2015.

The idea at the heart of the corporate strategy is to make an appropriate contribution towards reducing CO2 emissions, while also contributing towards the achievement of climate targets. As a result, the Husqvarna Group is clearly committed to the targets set by the Paris Climate Agreement. However, the sustainability programme “Sustainovate” goes way beyond this. It covers a wide variety of areas of activity within the company, such as employee satisfaction and diversity within the workforce, through to waste reduction and a high level of recycling, as well as occupational safety.

The use of energy has been a focus area for many years now. And it’s an area where we’ve had tremendous success. As of 2021, all Gardena sites worldwide are supplied with 100 percent green energy from renewable sources.

The company’s own products, which are designed to be as resource-efficient as possible, are a particularly important part of the “Sustainovate” sustainability programme. At Gardena, these are primarily irrigation products. They are constantly being reviewed and improved in terms of their water efficiency to avoid any wastage of the precious resource of water. Our consumers are on board with this idea and are opting for the most efficient irrigation products. This is also revealed by the significant sales growth in this product segment between 2015 and 2020.

In addition to drip irrigation with the Gardena Micro-Drip-System, sensors that measure moisture at the root of the plant are also in high demand. These values enable the water requirement to be adjusted, or for the water supply to be switched off. Automatic irrigation control systems and the Gardena smart system in particular are popular with our consumers. Thanks to the clever algorithms in the app, automatic irrigation is more economical than ever before and always perfectly tailored to the needs of the relevant plants or lawn area. This results in healthy plants, a beautiful lawn, more free time for garden owners and significantly lower water consumption.

Sustainability along the entire value chain is a major concern for Gardena. Since many products contain components from external suppliers, the aim was to audit and certify the suppliers with the highest order volumes, at least 70 percent in total. This target was also achieved in 2020.

The measures taken in the various areas have contributed to one thing above all else – the reduction of greenhouse gases. Since 2015, CO2 emissions have therefore been reduced by around two-thirds.

Engaging with other organisations is yet another component of Gardena’s sustainability programme. In addition to many smaller initiatives, the partnership with UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, has taken centre stage since 2018. Gardena has been lending its support to the organisation’s global water, sanitation and hygiene programme.
