Proper irrigation of plants leads to healthy growth, better harvests and, above all, avoids plant diseases. Although each plant has its own requirements, there are a few simple rules and tips that will help you to water beds and potted plants better.

1. Keeping it evenly moist. Each plant has a special water requirement, with most of them relying on regular moisture. It is best to water the plants so that all roots get enough water and not just the surface becomes damp. However, a slight drying out in between can stimulate root growth.

2. Casting at the right time of day. Watering plants is best in the early morning hours. Heated up by the day, the soil cools down overnight and less water evaporates compared to irrigation in the evening. In addition, the plants have enough time to absorb water and thus power for the upcoming day.

3. Keeping leaves dry
. Wet leaves cause sick leaves. If kept too moist overnight, fungal diseases can result. When the sun is shining, the burning glass effect of the water droplets can lead to slight burns on the plants.

4. Watering penetratingly. Better to penetrate once than water in many small doses. Thus the water penetrates also into deeper lying earth layers to all roots. Depending on the weather, it can be enough to water only 24-3 times a week.

5. Above ground, below ground? Underground drip irrigation is particularly suitable for shrubs such as hedges or woody and grassy shrubs, as well as lawns. Above-ground irrigation is suitable for individual irrigation of areas that are frequently replanted. This includes, for example, vegetable beds and pot or balcony plantings.

6. Avoid waterlogging. The plants should be watered sufficiently, but should not drown in water. Stagnant water in the soil displaces the breathing air in the soil, which removes oxygen from the roots. Measuring instruments such as soil moisture sensors are a good support here.

7. Using soft water. Due to its low chalk content, rainwater is in principle best suited for the irrigation of plants. Alternatively, tap water can be mixed with some distilled water to reduce the limestone content in the water. This makes it more digestible, especially for sensitive plants.

8. A rich source of food. A high content of clay minerals in the plant soil increases its swelling capacity. This results in a high water retention capacity of the soil and a more even water supply for the plants.
