After the summer is just before the next gardening season: autumn is not just about preparing the garden for winter so that the plants can recharge. It is also a good opportunity to replant, tidy up the garden and make the cold season easier for the garden's animal inhabitants.

Before gardeners and gardens go into a well-deserved winter rest, the foundations can be laid for a successful gardening season in the coming year. Fruit trees and shrubs such as the Amelanchier are not very demanding but offer the garden many advantages: as a supplier of delicious fruit, shade provider and CO2 producer. They are also – like dry and heat-tolerant perennials – a good source of food for animals. Perennials such as sedum flower well into autumn and their roots hold the soil in place even during heavy rainfall. The advantages of autumn planting are obvious: the autumn rain replaces constant watering of the young plants, which now have time to take root before the first frosts arrive.

Clean and well cared for into hibernation
To keep garden furniture in good shape for as long as possible, it needs a cleaning and care treatment before hibernation. With the Battery Multi Cleaner AquaBrush, furniture is cleaned effortlessly with a cordless brush and water power and then stowed away to dry. Wooden decking, fences and garden sheds are also happy to be cleaned before autumn. The brush and extension handle work together to achieve this without any problems. Once the wood is clean, a glaze or oil can be applied to protect it from the winter weather, depending on requirements and condition.

Every cut is a good deed
Faded perennials are left standing in autumn and winter. Decorated with frost, they are both a beautiful decoration and a winter home for insects. Grasses such as pampas grass are also pruned in spring. However, berry bushes, shrubs such as summer lilac or apple and pear trees can be pruned. This maintains vitality and supports a consistently high fruit yield.

With loppers such as the EnergyCut Pro, powerful, precise cuts can be made on branches up to 50 millimetres thick. The newly revised range of GARDENA loppers includes six bypass loppers and one anvil lopper, each with different features:

  • The bypass loppers are ideal for clean-cut pruning or maintenance pruning of fresh branches.
  • The anvil pruning loppers enable a particularly powerful cut and are ideal for dry and hard wood as well as for removing dead branches.

The blades of the loppers are also coated with PowerCoating. This specially developed coating creates a smoother surface and thus reduces friction when the blades glide through the branches. The innovative coating also protects the blades from corrosion and resin.

For those who don't like to rely on wobbly ladders, the StarCut Pro L tree and pruning loppers provides support at great heights. It can be telescoped twice and has a reach of up to six and a half metres. This makes it easy to trim and thin out larger shrubs and trees from the ground.

Like autumn leaves, branches are usually far too good to be thrown away. Cut, flexible, thin branches can be used to make holders for fat balls: The branches are folded together, shortened to one length with secateurs and then tied together at both ends. The branches are then pulled apart slightly in the centre and filled with fat balls (without netting) or some apples. Decorated with some ivy or leaves, they make a decorative and natural feeding place.

Gardening enthusiasts can also enjoy spending time in the garden in autumn: branches and leaves are utilized, while new plantings awaken the joy of the coming gardening year and support the resilience of the garden.
