With increasing periods of drought and heat, the responsible use of water is becoming more and more important. Those who have a rain water tank, cistern or even a well in their garden can use the valuable resource from above simply and purposefully.

Water is essential for people, animals and plants. Without sufficient irrigation, neither the plants in the bed nor the hedge will thrive. The most convenient - but often most expensive - source is tap water. However, rainwater has proven to be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative, especially for small gardens. It is often softer than water from the tap and thus more compatible with plants. This is because many plants, such as ferns, rhododendrons or blueberries, react sensitively to a high chalk content. In addition, a high carbonate hardness in the water increases the soil’s pH value, which causes plants preferring an acidic soil, to wither. In this case, it can be helpful to dilute the tap water with rainwater which is low in minerals.

Creating green spaces
In addition to aspects such as costs and plant care, there is also environmental protection: Those who irrigate with rainwater do their part to promote green habitats for humans and animals and to stop soil sealing. Plantings not only serve as places of retreat but also as natural air-conditioning systems. Plants absorb CO2, filter fine dust and dirt particles, and thus improve the air and the local climate. In addition, planted spaces facilitate water absorption and storage in the soil, which can play a decisive role in the expected increase in extreme weather situations. After all, heat and drought are increasingly followed by heavy rain. If areas are sealed or turned into supposedly low-maintenance and water-saving gravel gardens, the long-awaited rain can hardly seep away or evaporate in a cooling way.

Pumps: clever, quiet, efficient
In small gardens, a simple rain barrel is often sufficient as a collection container under the rainwater pipe for irrigation. A lid protects against contamination and prevents mosquitoes from using the water point to lay eggs. For larger gardens, a cistern or even drilling a well is worthwhile. For the latter, however, sufficient time and money should be calculated for the planning and drilling as well as the official costs.

When watering with sprinklers, shower heads, or water-saving drip irrigation, pumps help to pump the water from rain barrels, wells or cisterns. This is not only easy on the wallet but also saves precious drinking water. The completely revised range now offers exceptionally quiet pumps that can also be operated and automated via Bluetooth for the first time. Thanks to efficient hydraulics, water can be pumped out powerfully and yet with low electricity costs. Water in the garden moves powerfully and is quieter than ever before. If you are unsure about your choice, the GARDENA pump advisor can help you.
